SUPPLEMENTS TO AVOID

Avoid those supplements that promise you an easy and quick way to lose weight. Simple weight loss does not exist. Here are some questionable products that are highly promoted but not indicated:

Bitter orange – also known as citrus aurantium, is extracted from Seville oranges and it sounds safe enough. But you should know that this extract is full of amphetamine-type stimulants that boost up your metabolism artificially.

It is now banned in the United States. Most commercially promoted weight loss pills contain this extract so you should avoid taking such pills.

Carb blockers – this sounds as if you could eat a dozen donuts and not digest the carbs. Too good to be true. They are basically a form of dietary fiber that absorbs some of the starch and sugar from the foods you eat, preventing them from being absorbed.

You could do just as well by eating instead foods high in fiber or by using a fiber supplement such as psyllium.

Fat blockers – they are actually prescription medication that block fat absorption and they have side effects such as bowel leakage. There is no proof that they are effective in losing weight.
